A 1-year-old child is in grave condition after being shot in the head during an apparent road rage incident, according to reports.

The shooting took place on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive on Tuesday morning.

What are the details?

According to Chicago Police Commander Jake Alderden, the drivers of both vehicles were “completely unknown to each other.”

“There was a dispute possibly over somebody not letting somebody into a lane of traffic,” Alderden told reporters on Tuesday.

The vehicle carrying the child crashed shortly after the shooting, and a Good Samaritan stopped to help, according to reports. The unnamed passerby transported the child and other occupants of the car to nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The child was later transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition at the time and is said to be on a ventilator at the time of this reporting, having suffered a brain injury.

Associate Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marcelo Malakooti told reporters during a Tuesday briefing outside the hospital that the child remains in “grave condition.”

“It’s a very serious bullet injury,” he added. “It’s a very tenuous situation. It can change hourly for us.”

“Police recovered a handgun from the crashed car and are determining if it was fired during the incident,” ABC News reported.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) said that authorities have a suspect in mind and are “actively pursuing the other car.”

During a Tuesday press briefing on the incident, Lightfoot condemned the senseless violence and said, “Obviously any time anyone is shot in Chicago is tragic, particularly when it is a child. This was simple, but stupid, road rage.”

WLS-TV reported that police are indeed questioning a person of interest in the shooting and are still looking for the other vehicle, which is described as a black Chevrolet.
