McCain Shreds ‘Cowards’ at CNN, After AG’s Cuomo Report: ‘Why People Hate the Media’

News & Politics

Conservative ‘View’ co-host Meghan McCain sounded off today on the media for protecting and enabling the Cuomo family, after New York State Attorney General Letitia James found that Governor Andrew Cuomo had sexually harassed and touched multiple women inappropriately. While the liberal hosts were far more reserved in their criticism of the formerly-loved Democrat, McCain shredded the media for ignoring his nursing home scandal and accused CNN of “the worst kind of nepotism.”

Reliably, the conservative was the only host to hit the media for treating the Democrat governor like some kind of “deity” at the beginning of the pandemic:

I think there’s a lot of issues with — with Andrew Cuomo, and the way he’s been covered for the past few years during COVID. If you remember there was this whole like Cuomo sexual phenomenon in the media and with celebrities and I remember Chelsea handler tweeted that they had crushes on him. I always get uncomfortable when politicians are held to this deity standard. I always think its dangerous

McCain could’ve been talking about The View’s own network. One year ago, ABC’s Amy Robach swooned over the “love gov” on Good Morning America, calling him the “homecoming king.”

Not holding back, the co-host eviscerated the media for looking the other way while the governor put vulnerable COVID-19 positive patients in nursing homes, causing thousands of elderly deaths:

[T]here’s 15,000 elderly people whose lives didn’t matter to our society, didn’t matter to our culture. These older people didn’t matter. They could die in a really controversial and, you know, as far as I’m concerned, it was murder on the part — and the blood is on the part of Governor Cuomo’s hands, and we didn’t care. It’s not that sexual harassment isn’t disgusting and egregious and horrible, but it really says something about our society that we just do not care about old people. I’m sad those 15,000 people won’t get their day in court.

McCain saved her harshest criticism for CNN. She slammed the “disgusting” news network for letting Chris Cuomo avoid talking about his brother’s scandals, calling them “cowards” and guilty of the “worst kind of nepotism:”

And I also think its interesting–we had a conversation about nepotism on this show a few days ago. You want to talk about nepotism? Not having to talk about the biggest scandal in the country when it has to do with your brother and you’re hosting CNN, that’s nepotism. The Cuomo family and CNN are the worst kind of nepotism that the media has an example of.

If it were my brother, if my brother were somehow the governor and he had been accused of this, you are damn straight I would be talking about it on “The View” this morning, and that makes all of them cowards. I hope Governor Cuomo is either forced out of office or resigns and I hope that his brother Chris Cuomo has any kind of retribution whatsoever for his show because there was a point in time when they were doing comedy sketches with giant q-tips on air during the height — here we have a picture, and this was all fine and good. When it’s fine, it’s okay to air it. That’s journalism? It’s journalism now that he’s bad and he’s been accused of all this, and the investigation came out? It’s all disgusting. We wonder why people hate the media and hate journalism.

After her rant, the rest of the hosts sat in stunned silence. Liberal hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin refused to offer any commentary on Cuomo. Hostin put on her legal hat and only discussed what charges could be brought against him, in a matter of fact way.

Joy Behar was the only liberal on the show to condemn the “disgraceful” governor. She accused him of being a “narcissist” who needed to be forced out, because he wouldn’t willingly resign.

But of course Behar found a way to bring it back to Trump and praise Democrats:

I was thinking, you know, E. Jean Carroll accused Trump of rape and she’s waiting two years to come to court with that, and there have been 24 to 26 women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct over the years. Of course, he denies all of this, but I mean, we’ve heard nothing about this. As a matter of fact, Trump is thinking of running for president in 2024, you know?

But the Democrats have to step down to show the world, to show the country, that they are better than the other side just like Al Franken did. It’s important. He has to step down unless he wants to switch parties. That’s up to him.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: So what’s your thought on all this, Joy? Letitia certainly did — she did her job.

JOY BEHAR: She sure did. You know, he’s not going to resign because he’s narcissistic. He has a narcissistic disorder like a lot of politicians these days and a lot of men I know, but it’s disgraceful and inexcusable what he did, and he needs to resign. New York state needs a functioning governor.

There’s a woman waiting in the wings, lieutenant governor Kathy Hokele. She’s very highly qualified and it may be the only way we’re going to get a woman to be governor of New York state, but I have to say I’m impressed with the speed with which they conducted this investigation. I was thinking, you know, E. I always get uncomfortable when politicians are held to this deity standard. I always think its dangerous. The other tragedy for me is,I have been walking this path with my sister Janice Dean who lost her in-laws because of a mandate he gave to put COVID positive patients in nursing homes and she lost her mother-in-law and father-in-law. There will be a memorial for them this upcoming Sunday, and there’s 15,000 elderly people whose lives didn’t matter to our society, didn’t matter to our culture. These older people didn’t matter.
