Colbert Says Speaker Fight Is Proof God Exists, Wallace Praises Pelosi

News & Politics

CNN’s Chris Wallace travelled to CBS’s The Late Show on Thursday to discuss his career, the new season of Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace, and the on-going drama in the House of Representatives. While Colbert argued the Speaker battle is proof that God exists, Wallace argued it proves Nancy Pelosi was a genius.

After Wallace observed that Colbert is clearly enjoying Republicans trip over themselves, he decreed, “It just says to me there is such a thing as a God who pays attention to people like Kevin McCarthy, who are overt hypocrites, who clearly sold their soul for political power and get nothing in return. It just makes me happy that there is such a thing as karma. How about that?”

Wallace then recalled, “I came up on the train today… from D.C. to New York and when I got to New York, I happened to bump into Nancy Pelosi’s daughter.”

After Colbert interjected to clarify it was Alexandra, Wallace continued, “Alexandra, exactly. Well, she’s got other daughters, but it was Alexandra… In any case, we both agreed this would never happen under Nancy Pelosi because Nancy Pelosi had one rule which was if you don’t have the votes, you don’t go to the floor. So they– she simply would have said, ‘Well, the House is in recess. We’re going to wait.’ She would not have had 10 votes which is what we’re at as we speak right now.”

If McCarthy, or whoever ends up being elected Speaker, runs the House like Pelosi did, the media would not be portraying party unity as a positive thing. For them, party unity is a good thing so long as it advances Democratic goals, but Republican Party unity would be denounced as extremism and proof of conservatives driving moderates out of the party.

CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

STEPHEN COLBERT: It just says to me there is such a thing as a God who pays attention to people like Kevin McCarthy, who are overt hypocrites, who clearly sold their soul for political power and get nothing in return. It just makes me happy that there is such a thing as karma. How about that?

CHRIS WALLACE: I have an interesting story to tell you. I came up on the train today.

COLBERT: Okay.

WALLACE: From– that’s the end of the story. No, from –

COLBERT: I’m fas—I’m gripped so far.

WALLACE: From D.C. to New York and when I got to New York, I happened to bump into Nancy Pelosi’s daughter.

COLBERT: Alexandra.

WALLACE: Alexandra, exactly. Well, she’s got other daughters, but it was Alexandra.

COLBERT: I guessed.

WALLACE: In any case, we both agreed this would never happen under Nancy Pelosi because Nancy Pelosi had one rule which was if you don’t have the votes, you don’t go to the floor. So they– she simply would have said, “Well, the House is in recess. We’re going to wait.” She would not have had 10 votes which is what we’re at as we speak right now.

COLBERT: Right and he’s lost ten.

WALLACE: And incidentally, there is a possibility they may have to keep voting because they– Kevin McCarthy may not have enough votes to adjourn til tomorrow.
