A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the cold-blooded murder of a 65-year-old man outside a Homestead supermarket, in an attack caught on surveillance video and witnessed by bystanders.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Leon Lamont Hillman was taken into custody on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm for the April 12 killing of Sidney Report Myers.
Authorities say Myers was socializing outside El Charrito Supermarket at 708 SW 6th Avenue around 7:55 p.m. when Hillman approached wearing a light-colored hoodie. Surveillance footage captured Hillman pulling a revolver from under his clothing and opening fire on Myers at point-blank range.
Witnesses reported that Myers tried to defend himself, flailing his arms, but Hillman continued firing even after Myers fell to the ground. The suspect then fled north on SW 6th Avenue.
Despite being critically wounded, Myers managed to get on his bicycle and ride about two blocks before collapsing at the intersection of SW 8th Street and 6th Avenue.
A Florida City officer patrolling nearby was flagged down just before 8 p.m. after a bystander found Myers unresponsive and bleeding on the sidewalk. Paramedics airlifted him to Jackson South Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation from Homestead and Florida City police. A witness sitting in an electric wheelchair next to Myers at the time of the shooting identified Hillman, saying he knew him personally as the father of his niece’s child.
Hillman is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.
