Authorities cracked down on a large illegal cockfighting operation Friday afternoon, arresting 42 people and seizing dozens of roosters and thousands of dollars in cash.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to a rural property near SW 192nd Avenue and 143rd Street, where deputies found 72 roosters and several rooster claws, evidence of organized animal fighting.
Those arrested face charges including attending animal fighting or baiting and resisting arrest without violence. Deputies also impounded more than $39,000 from the scene.
In a statement, Sheriff Rosie Cordero Stutz condemned the activity, saying,
“This type of cruelty and illegal activity has no place in our community. Animal fighting is not only inhumane, but it often goes hand-in-hand with other serious crimes.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to dismantle illegal animal fighting networks in the area.
