Bolivar, NY – Two New York State Police troopers were stabbed Saturday afternoon while arresting a woman suspected of stealing a vehicle, prompting one officer to fire their service weapon in self-defense. The suspect was not struck by the gunfire and was taken into custody with minor injuries.
According to NYSP spokesperson Trooper James O’Callaghan, the incident began around 3:25 p.m. when troopers from the Amity barracks located a reported stolen vehicle in the village of Bolivar. The traffic stop took place in the parking lot of Crosby’s convenience store at 500 Main Street.
When troopers attempted to arrest the female suspect, she violently resisted and stabbed one officer just above the eye and another in the head, police said.
“In response to the assault, one of the troopers discharged their division-issued firearm, but did not strike the suspect,” the NYSP stated in a press release.
The trooper injured above the eye is reported to be in serious condition and was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. The condition of the second trooper has not been disclosed.
The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, was arrested at the scene. Authorities stated that she sustained only minor injuries during the confrontation.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. Charges against the suspect are pending, and additional information is expected as the case develops.
State police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident.
